Short Stack: Music Box, Wonder Woman, Blackest Night
I’m sorry that this is a day late. I’m pretty sure that UPS hates me. I could write an entire article on the effects that UPS does the human mind and patience, but I am the Graphic Novel Examiner, not the UPS Examiner. So let’s get in to it.
Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Music Box #1: Read my full review here.
Gotham City Sirens #5: Paul Dini does the impossible in making me loathe the concept of this book even more. He does this with the revival of Gagsworth A. Gagsworthy, the Joker’s one-time sidekick from the 60’s. How is Catwoman not able to take this guy out by herself, let alone with the help of Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn?
World’s Finest #1: Taking the concept of Superman/Batman team-ups and applying it to their extended families. This issue features Red Robin and Nightwing (Superman’s adoptive son, not the one that became the new Batman). This issue sucks. Red Robin asks Nightwing questions and then chews him out for answering those questions. It also took some gizmo for Red Robin to realize that lead might be interfering with Nightwing’s x-ray vision. Ya think?
Batman #692: Tony Daniel takes over both writing and penciling duties. The art is awesome. They need to turn the cover in to a poster. Since when did Black Mask start dressing like a vampire? The last few pages were all convoluted and I honestly have no idea what’s going on.
The Last Days of Animal Man #6: This was a fantastic mini-series. If you missed reading the issues, then pick it up when it becomes available in trade paperback.
Wonder Woman #37: This was a really solid issue. However, I did think that Diana gave up something a little too easy that she fought so hard to retrieve a few issues ago.
Superman: Secret Origin #2: Geoff Johns is somehow able to take everything that has ever been “taught” about Superman and mold it in to one story…that actually makes sense. Gary Frank’s art is amazing and I cannot get over how much Clark looks like Christopher Reeves.
Superman #693: We finally get to see what’s happened to Mon-El. I really like this character, and I like the direction all the Superman books are taking right now. Good stuff.
Detective Comics #858: Main story: This is so good! We get a peak in to Batwoman’s background and Greg Rucka tells it perfectly. There’s a twist in here that made my jaw drop. Back-up Story: The Question’s first story arc is complete. It’s an okay story, but it felt rushed. I know there is only 10 pages each issue, but there could still be more content.
Blackest Night #4: This is so, so awesome. There’s so much intensity with this issue that I had to catch my breath after reading it. I could actually feel the Flash’s fear. The scene with the Scarecrow was a little odd. How cool is Luthor though? This is a definite pick-up. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t be reading it anyway.
Quote of the week: Ares: “We’re not done, Diana. Did you think, merely because you split my skull in two, that I was finished with you?” –from Wonder Woman #37.
