New to the DC area? Or are you just tired of the same old bars? Alison Bayley is here to make sure you get the most for your money and navigate the DC bar scene like a pro.
This past weekend, some friends and I decided to try out Rocket Bar in Chinatown. It’s pretty absurd that I had never been here before, considering I live right down the street, but nonetheless, it was something new.
The bar is conveniently located across from the Chinatown metro stop and the entrance looks like a tiny closet, sandwiched between larger restaurants and shops right across from the Verizon Center. The stairs that lead you down below look like they were drawn by a Kindergartner- neon green with bright swirl designs and rocket cartoons everywhere. Once we got down to the actual bar, we were thrilled to find a few Big Buck Hunter games, along with seven pool tables. And, as if it wasn’t already pretty sweet, they had board games to rent for a few hours. The crowd was a little preppy for my taste, and the music was your typical post-college repertoire (think: Bon Jovi’s ‘Living on a Prayer’ followed by “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey,) but the overall atmosphere was a blast. This would be a great place to go on a first date or with a group of people you don’t know that well, since there were plenty of distractions between the board games and dart boards.
The drinks were pretty modestly priced with five dollar rail drinks and three dollar Pabst Blue Ribbon cans (if you can stomach more than one of those, then you’re in luck.)
Overall, I give it a B on atmosphere, an A- on drink specials, and a huge A++ solely for the fact that I was able to play Connect Four in a bar without strangers making fun of me.
