More haunted places in Austin, Texas
Need to ramp up the spook factor of Halloween? Austin has more than 40 places reputed to have wandering spirits, some tortured by unfortunate events during their earthly lives and others just lingering in the best part of Texas.
Hang out at these locales, and you might experience a spine-tingling adventure:
· Austin State School
www.aussusc.org has had sightings of patients who died there in the early 1900s and a report of a coffin popping out of the ground (the school was built over a cemetery).
· Teachers working late by the gym at Crockett High School
www.austinisd.org report hearing a little girl crying and walking up and down the hall.
· Are actors still hanging around the old theatre building of Capital City Playhouse? Reports from visitors to the building, now Fado Irish Pub,
www.fadoirishpub.com claim they are.
· The home of Major George Little field has abundant ghost tales, most about his wife Alice. The story says he locked her in the attic when he was away, where she was attacked by bats. She still shrieks in terror, and her ghost still roams the attic.
www.utexas.edu Tales from haunted locations like these are spun by guides of Austin Ghost Tours. 90-minute tours begin at Moonshine Patio Bar and Grill, 303 Red River Street. Cost is $20. Check website for times and other details.
www.austinghosttours.com Of course, Halloween is the perfect time to hear these tales, but guided walking tours to additional spooky spots are held at other times, too. Popular outings include the Sixth Street Pub Crawl, a tour focusing on the Capitol and Driskill Hotel, and an expedition focusing on the Servant Girl Annihilator (one of the first serial killers--pretty gory).
These true stories of Austin’s ghosts will bring a little chill to the autumn air.
