Michael Jackson's music defined culture
I'm sure many people believe they've heard it all and seen it all when it comes to the legacy of Michael Jackson. However the mysterious life of this musical icon can never be fully comprehended nor can his untimely death. The fact that millions of people were deeply hurt by the death of a single human being, who was neither a politician, religious leader, nor martyr, has led many to wonder exactly what was it about Michael Jackson that made him such an intriguing person.
Those who believe in divine calling say that Michael Jackson and others with extraordinary talent were sent here from God to bless us and to empower us. Agreeably so, his God given talent leads to the plausibility of exploring his life on other levels.
If culture can be defined as an intellectual development at a set time or place, then the rise and fall of Michael Jackson was definitely the cultural metaphor for a transitioning world. Understanding the nostalgia of Pop Culture, humanity embraced Jackson as the epitome of everything they were, everything they could be, and everything they feared they would become. His success was due to an immense popularity that stemmed from raw talent and a cult like following that spawned across generations, cultures, and countries. He became larger than life.
From the moment Jackson was labeled the “King of Pop”, he began creating his own culture and ultimately breaking down cultural barriers. He became the ultimate “Super Star” creating a new fashion culture, musical culture, dance culture, and maybe even the new media culture - now called the paparazzi.
Not ignoring his musical work, Civil Rights work, and his humanitarian efforts but the man whom many loved and adored educated them through his struggles. Yes- he taught people to moonwalk, but through his stories of abuse many learned to heal their own childhood wounds and love themselves. People learned through his legal battles to have faith and to not judge so quickly. Some learned from his naiveté’s how to channel their inner child. But perhaps his lyrics taught more: Each fan resonating with some part of songs like “Black or White “or” She's Out of My Life.”
Suspicions aside Jackson was the “Truth.” He sang realities; preached sermons overtop of pop tracks, and moved us with dance. People base life's journey by moments. Remembering the moment you heard the Jackson Five. Remembering the moment you first saw Thriller. Remembering the moment you saw him Moonwalk. Remembering the moment you heard ... MICHAEL JACKSON has died at the age of 50. All these events are bookmarks of a life and a culture that will live on forever. The man in the mirror is us and we are him. The Michael Jackson culture lives on.
