Recent research by British insurance provider InsureandGo reveals that skiers and snowboarders can save up to 40% this winter by staying at Bulgarian ski resorts instead of typical resorts in the French Alps, other European destinations and the United States.
The current global economic slowdown may deter some skiers and snowboarders from hitting the slopes during the upcoming holiday season. However, low costs in Bulgaria will enable winter sports enthusiasts to enjoy a week on the slopes without dipping too deep into their wallets.
The InsureandGo study compared the combined costs of flights, mid-range, 3-start hotel accommodations and six day lift passes at resorts throughout Europe and the United States. The following average costs are per person and were determined for the period between Christmas and New Year’s week (airfares were calculated for people traveling from Great Britain):
European countries were found to have much higher hotel rates than the United States. The average cost of a 7-night stay in the U.S. is $323, compared to $563 in Bulgaria and up to $1,514 in France.
However, the cost of 6-day lift passes are much cheaper in the Eurozone, ranging from $238 in Bulgaria to $336 in Switzerland. The average cost of 6-day lift passes in the United States is $535.
