What's old is new again: welcome back to Monkey Island

It's not big secret (ugh, bad pun) that the Monkey Island franchise is currently experiencing a bit of a resurgence of interest. With The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition burning up the charts on the consoles and PC, and Tales of Monkey Island from Telltale Games bringing us the first new installment in the series in over 15 years, it's clear that Guybrush Threepwood has managed to return to the land of relevance in the modern gaming landscape. Although long dormant, adventure games have managed to rise from their grave and capture the imagination of a whole new generation of gamers, and now, Lucasarts is bringing one of the most well-known titles to the most cutting-edge of portable devices: The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition has been unleashed on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

I've said for a while now that the current crop of touch based devices were an obvious choice to bring the forgotten genre of the point-and-click adventure game to. I've gone so far as to get ScummVM up and running on my T-Mobile G1 and my Nintendo DS just to see how these titles would work. Thankfully, we now have an officially sanctioned port by Lucasarts to experience. If you haven't checked out the new Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition, then I highly recommend doing so. The graphics have been completely redrawn in blisteringly high resolution, and a newly recorded voiceover track gives a new life to the characters that we all know and love. Not to mention that as a tip-of-the-hat to old jadded gamers like me, all of the shiny new paint can be switched on and off on the fly. It's an adventure that is worth the meager $8 asking price.

So, if you're an old fan of the series, then you'll enjoy the enhancements they've made to one of the greatest adventure games of all time. If you're brand new to the series, you finally get to see why all of the old cranky gamers shake their canes and tear up at the mere mention of this title. The iPhone is certainly shaping up to become the dark horse of the current crop of portable gaming devices, and top-notch games like The Secret of Monkey Island S.E. do nothing but cement that fact.
