This isn't your grandfather's Space Invaders

It would seem that Taito is on a roll lately with trying to bring the Space Invaders franchise into modern day relevance. Last year they gave us the fantastic Space Invaders Extreme for the Nintendo DS and the Playstation Portable, which was later ported to the XBox 360 with all new trippy background by the legendary Jeff Minter (of Tempest 2000 fame). Now in the recently announced Space Invaders Infinity Gene, Taito is taking Space Invaders to a whole new place; namely, the Y-axis.

That's right. For the first time ever, you can now move vertically in a Space Invaders game. Try not to faint over that bombshell. In addition to the newfound spatial freedom, the graphical representation in Infinity Gene has been given a pretty spectacular re-imagining. Where Space Invaders Extreme took the concept of the original game and added a plethora of special effects, Infinity Gene has taken a different route. The graphics are clearly vector-inspired in their presentation, and the entire screen seems to be a sparse, but dynamic playfield. Enemies approach from every direction, and aren't limited to the "invaders" we all know and love. Visually, this is certainly an interesting take on the concept and presentation of the Space Invaders franchise.

Sound wise, things are shaping up to be spectacular. Gone are the driving bass-heavy techno beats which permeated Space Invaders Extreme. In their place is some of the most amazing sounding chiptunes you're likely to hear anywhere. Seeing and hearing the game in motion, it's hard to imagine any other soundtrack for this game. It all fits so beautifully.

So there you have it. A fantastic example of how classic games can continue to push the boundaries of excellence on modern systems. Space Invaders Infinity Gene has been available for mobile phones in Japan since December of 2008, and Taito has announced that this fantastic looking title will be heading to the iPhone this year worldwide. While I'm not an iPhone owner (nor do I want one) it makes sense, considering how well titles like this sell on there. Personally, I'm holding out hope for a Nintendo DS port.
