Piedmont Virginia Community College, located in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia, has been awarded a US Department of Education grant to benefit working adults and displaced workers. Announced on October 12, 2009, the money is part of $11.25 million awarded by the United States Department of Education for 29 innovative projects carried out by community colleges in their districts.
The grant is designed to assist Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) with programs to prepare adults for re-entry into the job market or to update their current skills. Community colleges like PVCC are well-positioned to understand and meet the needs of local employers and students.
Over 102,000 students have taken classes at Piedmont Virginia Community College since it opened in 1972. PVCC is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Students have the opportunity to choose from over 52 associate degrees and certificate programs, all of which are designed to give adults as well as new college students the education they need to be successful. PVCC also offers Workforce Development courses through the Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA).
PVCC has an open admissions policy; anyone that is at least 18 years of age can apply and register for classes. Students under 18 must have a high school diploma, GED or take placement tests to assess educational level. PVCC offers customized training classes for employers or other organizations. Contact PVCC now for more information about becoming an adult learner or updating your work skills or those of your employees.
With a mission to "promote student success through excellent educational programs and services that are accessible and affordable," PVCC educators and staff are motivated to meet the needs of adult learners. This grant will certainly help meet the needs of the community; but it is also a public acknowledgement of the good work that Piedmont Virginia Community College is already doing in Charlottesville and the surrounding community.
