Big 12 to Play Host for NCAA Tournament Championship
The Big 12 Conference made history this week when the NCAA selected the conference to host the NCAA men’s basketball regional round of the tournament. The Big 12 will host games in 2013 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Then in 2014 the Cowboys Stadium will be the venue for the Final Four.
It will be the ninth time since 1997 that the Big 12 has hosted NCA men’s contests. However, they have only played host to the first or second rounds in the previous eight years. Besides playing the Final Four in the Cowboys Stadium, the Big 12 will use the stadium for the conference football championships in 2009 and 2010.
“It’s always an honor to be selected as a NCAA Tournament host,” noted Tim Allen, Senior Associate Commissioner for the Big 12. “We consider it a privilege and look forward to welcoming four schools to North Texas and showcasing one of the greatest venues in the world.
Also, the NCAA in recognizing the 75th years anniversary of the basketball championship, the committee selected venues and cities for that year which have served as the backdrop to great tournament moments. Kansas City, which has played host to 28 tournaments, including 10 Final Fours will also be included. The Sprint Center will be the venue in Kansas City. Overall, eight cities in the Big 12’s seven state region will host NCAA competition between 2011-2013.
Other happenings in the Big 12. Kansas State’s, Luis Colon broke his hand in workouts and will miss 4-6 weeks. His development last year helped make up for the departure of NBA draft choices, Michael Beasley and Bill Walker. A key for both Colon and the Wildcats will be his ability to improve and maintain his conditioning so that he will be able to step in once the season starts.
Some rumblings going on over at Kansas. Check out the Kansas City Star front page for a lead story on the friction that has arisen between the football and basketball teams. However, if there is one athletic director and coach who can get everyone on the same page, it is Lew Perkins and Bill Self. Both teams don’t need this type of distraction to take away from two outstanding programs stocked with fantastic young men. Let’s just hope it is growing pains that will be ironed out with maturation.
