Twitter: Big 12 basketball coaches connect with fans
The Twitter phenomenon has swept the country and the world, so why wouldn’t college basketball coaches jump into the fray and use it as well. Many coaches from John Calipari of Kentucky to Gary Williams of Maryland tweat daily about events that happen on their campus.
In the Big 12, seven of the twelve coaches use twitter as a way to connect with their fans. I think it is a great medium to get your message out and some have used if more efficiently than others. For example, some of Doc Sadler’s recent tweats have been about the upcoming Nebraska basketball camp. Also, he talked about his golf game and is one of the more humorous coaches to use twitter.
There are many things you can learn about a coach when he starts tweating. I learned that Iowa State Coach Greg McDermott is a big Cubs fan and that Jeff Capel just recently had a new baby. Missouri Coach Mike Anderson is anxiously awaiting the NBA Draft in one of his tweets.
As I write this column JeffCapel has the most followers with 2212. Doc Sadler is a close second with 2009. All of the coaches using twitter are listed below with their twitter account names and number of followers. Also, don’t be confused by imposters. Coach Bill Self is listed on twitter, but according to the Kansas Sports Information Director that is not the real Bill Self. He does have 458 followers. Not bad for a phony. Therein lies the potential danger in twitter.
It is a great way to connect with your fans, but will they become too possessive? I remember years ago listening on the radio to the Rick Pitino radio show and a fan called in and said he was up all night breaking down film. Pitino handled it very diplomatically, but basically told the fan to expand his life. I hope that doesn’t happen with twitter.
