Sizzling temperatures bring an endless array of great outdoor activities. You can hit the pool, the park and the parade—at little to no cost.
Yet oftentimes this list seems impossible. The reason? Your energy is a bit, well, absent. Your tank of gas runs out after a single game of Marco Polo, and by the time the day is done you barely have the energy to wave your tiny American flag at your neighborhood parade.
The culprit? You may not be eating the right breakfast. The popular phrase “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” exists for a reason. A nutritious (and delicious!) breakfast is the perfect way to boost your energy for a day of family fun. Choose one of these morning meals, and you’ll be raring down that waterslide and perhaps even actually win tag for a change.
PB&B (Peanut butter and banana): The combination of protein and potassium is a perfect pair. Add a few raisins or a bit of granola for an extra crunch. Freeze the banana for a truly “cool” summertime treat.
Breakfast burrito: Scramble one egg and two egg whites and heat up a tortilla in a skillet until it turns a nice golden brown. Add a few of your favorite veggies (red peppers and avocado are my personal favorites) and sprinkle a bit of cheddar and you’ve got yourself a tasty meal that packs a huge protein punch.
Fruit-and-yogurt parfait: Try this healthy version of your McDonald’s breakfast staple. Spoon a bit of low-fat yogurt (Try Yoplait, which offers tasty fat-free and low-fat versions in a variety of flavors) at the bottom of a large glass. Then, add a layer of your favorite fruit, topped with your favorite cereal to give it a little crunch. Repeat until you’ve reached the top of the glass. Drizzle honey on top. You’ll swear your eating an ice cream sundae, and you’ve just saved hundreds of calories.
Bacon sandwich: That’s right, bacon. Healthier bacon options, like Jennie-O Extra Lean Turkey Bacon, are lower in fat and just as high in flavor. Put the slices on a whole-wheat bagel or English Muffin and enjoy your tasty breakfast sandwich—sans artery-clogging fats. Turkey bacon cooks a bit quicker than pork bacon, however, so keep an eye on it to make sure it sizzles instead of frizzles.
