Whether you spend the summer hiking in the Himalayas, scuba diving off the Big Island in Hawaii, or just going to and from work in the hot, dry weather, most likely your hair will desperately need serious nutrients and hydration.

The culprits? Summer weather and the environment have a love-hate relationship with hair. The sun, wind and high levels of chlorine exposed to the hair cause the hair cuticle to explode wide open—resulting in lost proteins. Often hair loses shine as the nutrients are stripped from sun-kissed tresses. A pool may be refreshing on a hot, summer day, but the chlorine is an oxidizer that actually speeds up the process of hair cuticle opening. And, you already know the damage Mr. Sun does to luscious locks.

The savior? A summer cocktail, of course! Michael O’Rourke, CEO and Founder of Love Your Hair and Sexy Hair has a simple, but highly effective, hair cocktail that contains rich nutrients and anti-oxidants to help moisturize hair and stop the damage process.

The recipe? After shampooing, blend jojoba oil, (almond oil and extra virgin olive oil will work too) and avocado until the mixture is super creamy. Place a few drops of your favorite essential oil such as lemon verbena, ylang, ylang, lavender or mandarin orange for a light summer fragrance. Apply thoroughly to wet hair, from roots to ends. Leave in hair for 15 minutes and then rinse. This treatment is great for swimmers.

To hold frizzies at bay, O’Rourke recommends combining Sexy Hair Pumpkin Potion and Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Smoothie to keep hair full and moisturized. Mix two parts Pumpkin Potion to one part Soy Smoothie, apply to hair and style as usual.

For beachy hair, Frederic Fekkai’s new Beach Waves Styling Spray creates soft, relaxed waves that look like you spent the day on a tropical island. Fekkai’s Beachcomber Leave-In Conditioner will help you detangle and hydrate tresses with ocean-themed ingredients including marine peptides and sea algae, and, the UV-ray-shielding technology helps with keeping color from fading.
