Jewel thrilled about 500 lucky fans, performing a free 2-hour concert at the intimate Roxy Theater in Hollywood on Sunday night. It was a way of saying thank you to many of those who have stayed loyal and have followed her 13-year career.
She began the night with a tender A-cappella version of the classic “Somewhere over the Rainbow,” highlighting her amazing range and her sweet and soulful vocal styling. Wearing a mini dress and boots, she displayed her usual sexy and alluring demeanor while setting a relaxed and friendly tone to the evening asking for requests early on. Her song selections included hits “Who Will Save Your Soul,” “Intuition,” and “Foolish Games,” as well as some other gems such as “Been Down So Long”, “Standing Still” and “Pieces of You.”
Jewel also did a couple of songs from her new CD, “Lullaby,” which she referred to as “lullabies for adults.” She sang another beautiful new song called ‘A Hole in My Heart in the Shape of You”, which she dedicated to a good friend who recently passed away.
Jewel delighted the audience by the highlighting many of her songs with some great stories. There was the humorous tale of her and a friend who were invited by the “federales” in Mexico to climb aboard their boat as they were on their way to a drug bust. She also told some revealing stories of her humble beginnings in San Diego; like the now legendary saga of her having to live in her car, and then having her car stolen. She also told of her “aha moment” when she was holding a dress in her hands that she was planning to steal and she realized her hands could be used to create positive things in her life rather than stealing.
For an encore, she did a soft and gentle tune called “Angel” and ended the night in traditional Jewel fashion by yodeling, something she learned from her father growing up in Alaska,
Toward the end of the night, she got emotional saying “she never expected her life to turn out so well; with a successful career and a very happy marriage.” She felt blessed and thanked everyone for coming and for his or her support. You got the feeling that this was not just a special and memorable evening for the hundreds of devoted fans, but also for this very grateful and talented singer songwriter as well.
