When deer...attack?
An Indiana woman was sitting in her backyard with her daughters and granddaughters last Saturday when a doe came into their yard. Their dog Maggie, an affenpinscher, barked at the female deer.
Instead of running away, as is typical behavior of deer, the doe suddenly charged and stomped on Maggie.
“We were screaming when the deer started running toward all of us,” Jeanette Marchant told the Herald Times. “The deer caught up with Maggie and ran over her and trampled and killed her.”
The attack was a “very rare and isolated incident,” said Indiana Conservation Officer Jon Fennig. “Deer do not attack. They are not a predatory animal. I don’t understand why she would.”
Marchant had to the call the Indiana Department of Natural Resources on the Thursday after the attack when the doe stationed herself near Marchant's door, making the woman afraid to venture out with her other dog, a poodle.
The doe ran off when Officer Fennig arrived with his rifle. Looking around the premises, the officer discovered a possible reason for the doe's unusual behavior: a newborn fawn, believed to be born on Saturday or Sunday, was found near Marchant's yard.
"With a brand new fawn, I imagine she’s going to be a little aggressive,” Officer Fennig told the Herald-Times. He believes mother deer and fawn will leave of their own accord once the fawn is strong enough.
