Socks the cat, who once lived in the White House and spent his days curled up on a blue silk striped chair near the Oval Office has died. He was 20.

Once a stray, Socks was rescued by Chelsea Clinton and taken home to live with Chelsea and her parents, Bill and Hillary, later moving into the governor's mansion in Arkansas, then onto the White House.

At the historical D.C. residence, Socks liked to spend most of his time curled up on a blue silk chair near Betty Currie, who was President Clinton's personal secretary.

When the Clintons left the White House, Socks went to live with Ms. Currie and her husband in Maryland.

"Betty asked if Socks could come live with her. The Clintons didn’t abandon Socks," friend and presidential historian Barry Landau told PEOPLE.com. "They were totally conflicted. It broke their hearts, but they knew it would be the right thing for Socks’ welfare."

Socks had been fighting throat cancer. The Curries' beloved was put to sleep on Friday morning. "He could no longer stand and wasn’t eating," said Landau.

The Curries plan to have Socks cremated.
