A 5 year-old bear taught to ice skate and perform tricks as part of a Russian troupe called "Bears on Ice," suddenly attacked two circus members during a rehearsal last week in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
It's not clear what set the bear off, but during the rehearsal, the bear suddenly grabbed a 25 year-old circus director by the neck and dragged him across the ice, nearly severing one of the man's legs, reports CNN. The man died of his wounds.
The bear's 29 year-old trainer tried to stop the attack and suffered deep lacerations to his skull and body, bruising to his brain, and is in critical condition, reports CNN.
The bear was shot and died at the scene. "Russia has a long-standing tradition of training bears to perform tricks such as riding motorcycles, ice skating, and playing hockey," reports CNN. "Fatal attacks are unusual."
