This is a terrible story to share, but if it will help save another toddler's life by making parents and babysitters more cautious, it is worth the telling.
A 17-month old toddler was attacked by his babysitter's 65-pound dog on Friday morning, and later died from his injuries, reports the Modesto Bee in California. The babysitter told police that "her pit bull and Akita mixed-breed dog attacked the child, biting its throat and dragging him around the yard," according to the Modesto Bee.
The toddler's parents were notified of the tragedy. No charges have been filed yet, but police are investigating the incident. It is not known whether the dog had a history of attacking people; the dog is in the custody of local animal control.
UPDATE: KMPH Fox News reports that the attack took place at the babysitter's home. The dog did not belong to the babysitter, but was at the house because the babysitter was watching the dog for her future in-laws. The dog has not been euthanized and remains in quarantine until the investigation is complete.
