A mother in Jacksonville, Florida accidentally shot a neighbor with a 9-mm handgun as she was trying to scare off a dog. It happened early Sunday evening.
The shooter, whose name has not been released, was inside her home when she heard her seven-year old son screaming from the front yard. Looking outside, the mother saw what appeared to be a black pit bull-looking dog attacking her child.
The mother grabbed her gun, ran outside, and fired a single shot in hopes of scaring the dog away. It worked, but with dangerous consequences.
The bullet ricocheted off the driveway and slammed through the wall of a neighbor's trailer across the street, where it struck a woman in the back.
The woman, who suffered non-life threatening injuries, was holding an 18-month old baby on her lap at the time. Other children were also in the home, but luckily, nobody else was hurt.
The mother who shot the gun was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm and culpable negligence. The dog was nowhere in sight by the time police arrived at the scene.
