I may not share his political views, but I found out that the newest political celebrity is a dog lover too. "Joe the Plumber" aka Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher was thrust into the nation's glare when his name was batted around like a tennis ball during the October 15 presidential debate, being mentioned a total of 23 times.
The media descended, plastering his name and visage all over the news. Under such circumstances, rules of pop culture dictate that Joe the Plumber either get a reality show or pen a book. He chose the latter.
Entitled, Joe the Plumber--Fighting for the American Dream, it is slated for a paperback release on December 1, 2008. (One wonders whether he will appear on Jon Stewart's Daily Show.) Joe the Plumber also has a new website and has been encouraged to run for political office in his home state of Ohio.
But, I wanted to know, does Joe the Plumber have a dog? It's a question I'm always curious about when it comes to famous people; it humanizes them somehow.
I decided to email him this morning, and lo and behold, he wrote me back.
"I have a Black Lab, his name is Kaito, and he is almost 9 years old." Joe the Plumber replied. He earnestly hoped that people would like his book and wished me to "Have a Great Day!"
Encouraged, I sent him a few more dog-related questions.
"Yes, I am very much a Dog Lover," he wrote back. "I have had dogs all my life."
And what does he think of small dogs?
"Me, personally, the only small dog I have ever liked or would think of owning would be a dachshund," he admitted. "Small dogs are 'real dogs' just not for me."
What did he think of dogs dressed as "Joe the Plumber" on Halloween?
"I'm really easy going and can find humor about all kinds of things," Joe wrote. "I have no problem laughing at myself, either."
Well, that's good. Now that he's in the public eye, he's going to need his sense of humor and easy going Lab retriever type personality--in spades.
