With the changing of fall into winter even a short hike can quickly change into a hypothermia problem .
I have had to on many occasions during a guided hike, stop the hike and head back because of shivering and impending hypothermia.
Don’t let this happen to you.
Never ever use cotton fabric of any sort, not even your underwear or socks. Cotton kills.
1. First layer against the skin.
Base layer is the first layer of clothing you put on and it is in direct contact with your skin. Use high tech synthetic fabric or silk that wicks sweat away from your body.
I recommend silk against the body and a synthetic over the top of the silk.
2. The insulation layer
This is the second layer of clothing that goes over your base layer. The purpose of the Insulation Layer is to retain body heat. This should create a layer of dead air around your body. It will reduce the heat exchange between your body and the outside .A synthetic fleece or down coat are recommended.
I recommend using a wool sweater with a down coat for this layer.
3. Outer shell layer
Keep moisture out is probably the most important task and your heat in. You need breath ability and waterproof material such as Gore-Tex
I recommend using a Gore-Tex loose fitting coat that goes over your hips with a hood.
