I

I was leading a group of about twenty people on a moonlight hike last night. We were traveling along the trail, when I heard something. At first flush I thought it was a coyote. Then I heard it again. “Help.”

She was rescued by us within an hour of hearing her voice. Other then being cold, scared and crying, she was fine. We meet the Search and Rescue team three miles later.

This is a list of what she did right and wrong.

What she did wrong

  1. She was alone. Always Buddy up.
  2. Left no written plan of where she was going or contact info on her car windshield.
  3. No whistle.
  4. No extra batteries for her flashlight. No wool cap. Heat migrates up and is loss through the top of your head.
  5. She over estimated her abilities and the difficulty of the hike

What she did right

  1. She had a cell phone.
  2. She called 911 for Search and Rescue.
  3. She was layered for warmth. She was smart enough to use her camera flash to direct us to her.

Don’t let this happen to you.
