40 Days of introspection [day thirty-four: belief vs. Knowing]
To Know
Many people were raised to “believe” in something—Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, God, ourselves, and so on—with that something usually being outside of them. The instruction to go within and connect with oneself seemingly did not exist. Everything appeared to be external rather than internal, which unbeknownst to those who thought they had your best interest at heart, created separation and an inner longing for something. When we only practice the act of external seeking we slowly connect with feelings of inadequacy, lack, and begin feeling that something so severely needed is missing. Many were instructed (directly or indirectly) to have faith. Church, Temples, Synagogues, Mosques, and other religious gathering places perpetuated this need to have faith in something or someone [external] that did not reside within the individual. With this type of faith—belief—comes reaching, grasping, and seems to keep people on the edge of their seats, often afraid. When we believe there is also a certain amount of disbelief; it may or may not happen. Some pray harder in their belief, they chant louder, or they host various “studies” gathering to ensure that their belief manifests. What happens when it does not manifest? Is that due to a lack of belief, of faith, of external reaching?
The way in which outcomes show themselves—getting what we desire or not—often has nothing at all to do with belief, but rather the vibration upon which we exist, the spiritual vibration. Belief, in the way that is illustrated above, cannot produce the desired outcome, because there is separation. There is almost a lack of faith in the believer that reaches desperately for the answer, or has to convince self and other that they believe. This is not real belief. If it were, there would be no need to try to make things happen, to manipulate situations, or when it does not occur as desired, to say that it must not have been the will of [someone] outside of you. One’s thought is one’s will. This is why there is a need to be the thought you possess and watch them mindfully as to create what you truly desire, and dissolve all else. In truth, many people have struggled with this type of belief; it is just that an ingrained religion keeps them from the practice of true inquiry, as they may be met with decisions that cause discomfort, and that challenges their core.
Practicing external belief has been a constant. It has been a practice handed down from generation to generation in an effort to give people something to hold on to, something to turn to or call upon in their time of need. Yet this practice has not suited everyone and their [inner] needs to feel settled, resolved, at peace, and really clear on who they are, their lives, careers, their purpose, and so on. Belief leaves room for doubt, as you are unsure whether or not things will happen as you desire. You hope that they do, but there is some part of you that is unsure, doubtful, hence the need to tap in to something larger, something that exists deeply within and something that cannot be swayed: knowing.
When we know something to be true, as compared to believing something, we do not see separation. There is no need to hope, have faith, or [mentally] manipulate in order to render… Knowing simply means that you have set the clear intention on the highest vibration, and let it be. There is no more to be done when you know something. You call it forth by setting the intention; it manifests as a result of this clear intention and your non-attachment to its outcome. Knowing aligns you with the best outcome in the biggest picture of your life. When you practice knowing that you will always be sustained, and that you can call forth your own reality, there is no need to do anything more. Be still and know… You become one with the very essence of your thoughts, desires, and so on, and there is no longer a need to believe, because you are able to see the Oneness. For example, do you believe that your name is…, or do you know it is? Belief comes with a question mark, whereas knowing arrives at a period; there is nothing beyond it. How then can the shift be made from belief to knowing: mindful practice in each moment and consciously changing one’s thoughts in order to deprogram years of illusion. It also requires that you fully know and understand your worth (introspection day 30). When you know who you are and that you are and have always been worthy, you can more easily, albeit still challenging in moments, see the gap (day 33) closing, and the separation between self and the object, whatever that may be, diminishing; belief is transformed to knowing.
Belief vs. knowing asks you to reassess your thoughts—that which you have always believed—and see how much of those beliefs you actually know to be true or are simply holding on to as a result of conditioning, lack of inquiry, and fear. When you allow yourself to feel the discomfort of inner-investigation, honesty, and change, you might come to realize that you have been holding on to myths and legends, fears and denial, and pain, hurt, and anger—all preventing you from knowing the answers to your life’s journey. Making the shift in thought sets the intention and energy behind making the shift in ultimate and immediate manifestation of your truth—what you know.
