Along comes another straight-to-DVD sequel. This one is no joy to watch, but it does get the adrenaline pumping. In 2001, the original 'Joy Ride' starred Paul Walker, Steve Zahn, and Leelee Sobieski (check out her over the top performance in the much hated Al Pacino flick '88 Minutes'). A conversation with a trucker over a CB radio turns into a nightmare for the three as the unstable trucker, known as 'Rusty Nail', stalks them with his massive truck and his resourceful use of blunt objects.
Of course, Rusty Nail has returned in the sequel with a much smaller budget and a virtually unknown cast. This time around, there are four new victims (Nicki Aycox, Nick Zano, Kyle Schmid, and Laura Jordan) and the maniacal trucker (now being played by Mark Gibbon) is at it again.
Following some car trouble on their way to Vegas, the four friends are on foot and stumble upon a supposedly abandoned house. Once they break their way inside to find a phone with a signal. They see a prized possession sitting in the garage. A sleek vehicle that looks as if it has never been moved. In typical fashion of slasher movie victims, they make the the dumb decisions first, by taking the car. They figure no harm done, borrow the car to go get help for their own stranded car, then bring back the stolen one, place it back in the garage, and leave some money for all damages to the house. Isn't that brilliant? Two guesses as to who owns this now stolen car and lives in the now damaged house.
What follows is a cat and mouse game between the four friends and Rusty Nail. Just like in the first film, we never actually get a good look at Rusty, we only get glimpses of his scruffy beard and greasy hair protruding from underneath his hat. He has gotten even more despicable in this sequel, if that was even possible. He claims to have planned on taking time off the road and going back home. That was until those pesky kids messed with his property.
There are plenty of chills and a lot of bloodshed to keep the horror fans happy. There are even a few very uncomfortable torture scenes with the maniacal trucker getting a big kick out of watching his potential victims suffer. It does get a little out of hand. The viewer may find that hitting the fast forward button to the end to see Rusty get what's coming to him is just the answer! Keep your eye out for the 'surprising' final scene. Just when you thought it was over...
