This thriller, 'Final Destination', from New Line Cinema could definitely be considered ground breaking. It's a slasher flick with teenagers trying to escape the clutches of a killer, but this killer is different. There is no Freddy, Jason, or Michael Myers chasing after them. The culprit is simply death itself.
Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Kerr Smith, and Sean William Scott star as survivors of a plane explosion. Alex (Sawa) has a premonition just minutes before the plane is scheduled to take off. He envisions the plane catching fire and exploding, killing everyone on board. In the process of trying to convince everyone to get off of the plane, security has him thrown out along with several of his fellow students and one teacher. Minutes later, the plane takes off, heading to Paris for a high school senior trip, leaving Alex and several of his classmates behind. But the wheels have barely left the ground when a shattering explosion occurs.
The teens realize that they have just escaped death. Alex tells his story to the authorities, who of course find it suspicious that he knew about the accident. Not too long after, Alex realizes that death had a plan and by him and his classmates getting off the plane, he ruined death's design. From here, the surviving classmates and staff meet gruesome deaths one by one in freak accidents. Death itself has come back to take all survivors unless Alex and his friends can find a way out. Ali Larter plays Clear, a quiet misfit who is the first to believe Alex's story when others are skeptical. Sean William Scott plays a goofy fellow classmate, giving some comic relief, and Kerr Smith plays the cocky jock who spends most of the movie getting in Alex's face.
If the premise of this film sounds creepy and disturbing, that's because it is. Viewers may find themselves thinking a lot about the 'plan' and how one wrong turn or one change of direction could make a difference between life and death. Others will just watch this and have a great time. The acting is above par, the gory special effects are original and unique, and all the accident scenes are quite haunting.
The success of this film spawned several sequels, including the upcoming, supposedly final, 'Final Destination 4' due for release this summer. If you enjoy this movie, be sure to check out the sequels. Part 2 steps up the shock value and gore factor, while Part 3 is a bit disappointing but still worth a look.
