Christmas tunes go retro with 8-Bit remakes
Anyone who's spent any significant amount of time working in a retail, food service, or mall environment in the holidays can tell you: Christmas music gets old fast. That’s why it’s worth particular note that Doctor Octoroc’s latest chip-tunes effort is so listenable.
8-Bit Jesus is the work of a man clearly in love with both gaming and music. These are 8-bit covers in the traditional sense: any old musician can produce a midi file that sounds “like” an NES version of classic Christmas songs like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Silent Night, and Carol of the Bells. Doctor Octoroc goes a step further: he makes an album dedicated to the concept “What if there had to be Christmas music that fits appropriately in these retro games?” By utilizing the same chip instrumentation, and some of the most familiar melodic phrases, Doctor Octoroc produces songs that would fit right into Ninja Gaiden (Ryu the Red Nosed Ninja), Megaman 2 (Silent Knight Man), and Castlevania (Carol of the Belmonts.)
Like the music from these classic games, the good doctor’s outing is infectious. The album is short, just over ten minutes, but that is true to the medium. Most of the tracks in classic games loop endlessly. Plus, at only ten minutes, and a cost of free, it’s easy to listen to once or twice and tell if its worth an add to your iPod for the holiday season.
