Summer is here and that means vacation season. For most, a time of exciting destinations with great plans in store. For those with autistic children, more of a full scientific exploration. Lists of where to go, noise levels, unexpected occurrences that may happen, writing out the social stories, and how each routine will fit into the "vacation" part. It really doesn't seem like you can win sometimes. I know fellow Examiner Brian Field has discussed this.
I have found with a "go for it" attitude, all can go well. The key is freedom. A place where there aren't really specific things to do. Also, day trips count as vacations for quite a while in the child's life. There are some good ideas at the Autism Support Network to help behaviors. Places that have worked well for my family are:
Beach - try buying a pop up tent /enclosure. Having a place to go to when stimuli are overwhelming really is great (and good for pets or snacking away from sand!)
Camping - especially in a yurt which is a little more controlled environment
Portland Children's Museum - especially the water works exhibit.
Hoyt Arboretum - a great hike for kids(wear them out for the day)
99W Drive in movies(in Newberg) - this is like a vacation as you get there early, park, play for hours until the movie starts, then watch the movie at your volume with blankets, keys, and matchbox cars in tow.
These are just a few ideas. I'd love to hear more places that have worked for your family so leave a comment. And next time I have a spectacular find that is sure to excite you! Can you say cruise?
