The U.S. Golf Association could rule as early as Nov. 9 on an appeal brought by TaylorMade-adidas Golf regarding the possibility to sell independently face inserts wth its Z (or U) grooves.

At first glance, TMaG should have a good case given the fact the the USGA has said it will allow larger, aggressive grooves, such as the Z grooves, during 2010, but one never knows what to expect from the USGA, which wants TMaG to halt plans to sell the face inserts.

To clarify, TMaG Chief Technical Officer Benoit Vincent told me that, this year and next year, TMaG can sell the new x-FT wedge assembled with a Z groove face insert (pre-2010 rule) and a ZTP groove face insert (conforming to the new 2010 rule).

"In 2009, we can sell independently face inserts with Z grooves and ZTP grooves,'' Vincent said. "In 2010, we can sell independently face inserts with ZTP grooves.''
