Some interesting tidbits from around the Internet as the Mets' tilt against the Pirates has been washed out due to rain tonight:
- Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News reported earlier this afternoon that struggling reliever J.J. Putz (right) has been removed from his post as the team's setup man, and will be pitching in the seventh inning.
Manager Jerry Manuel notified Putz of the move in a meeting this afternoon, and told him that rookie Bobby Parnell will be assuming the eighth inning duties until he can get himself right.
If he can't bring the same "intensity" to the eighth inning as he did to the ninth, how is he going to get it right in the seventh inning? I'm interested to see how this situation develops, and your guess is as good as mine as to how it will play out.
- With the rainout tonight, Mike Pelfrey will be pushed back to start tomorrow's game, and Tim Redding will start Friday night in Washington against the Nationals.
- The Mets were hit with more bad news on the injury front today, as Jose Reyes pulled himself from an extended spring training game with discomfort in his calf. He is being flown to New York to meet with team doctors.
Not good news at all for this club. With Alex Cora set to return, Reyes' return (scheduled for Friday) would have brought much more stability to the club's lineup. At this point, when he will return is uncertain, leaving yet another huge question mark as the team moves forward.
