Sesame Street premiered 40 years ago today, marking a turning point in public broadcasting and children’s programming. From the program’s strong educational foundation, inventive animation segments, culturally diverse cast, charming interaction between the human and Muppet characters, and its ability to appeal to parents and preschool children, Sesame Street has been a groundbreaking show on many levels.
Considering how much competition Sesame Street gets from DVDs and cable channels that are totally devoted to children’s programming, it is amazing that Sesame Street has been able to keep itself relevant over the course of four decades. Today on YouTube.com, parents (and their preschoolers) can take a walk down Sesame Street—and Memory Lane—with highlights from the past 40 years. My personal favorite? A fuzzy memory from 1973, featuring Stevie Wonder performing his hit song “Superstition.” Even those of us who were four years old at the time could still appreciate great music when we heard it.
