Earlier this month when the very talented Amy Adams arrived at The Late Show with David Letterman she accessorized her navy blue coat with a gorgeous printed scarf. Printed clothing has been popular for years but this season we are noticing that animal print is no longer for teenyboppers and cougars. In fact, many well respected designers have added animal prints to their latest collections. Project Runway judge Michael Kors has both leopard print trench coats as well as zebra and giraffe print dresses in his fall/winter 2008 collection. Dress designer DiHera created a leopard print dress which makes animal print appropriate for high society. New Zealand designer Rebecca Taylor, who is very popular in New York, has created leopard print cardigans to keep women warm and fashionable. During a season where fur coats appear to be the norm on Fifth Avenue and uptown, why not change things up and show your originality by wearing animal print, not animal fur.
While animal print seems to be all over the stores, there are a couple rules to remember about wearing it. First of all, animal print (especially leopard print) can look cheap if not properly thought out. So don’t wear a leopard print top with a short skirt and heels! Instead, try not to wear animal print with more revealing outfits. A great idea is to wear an animal print as one of the many layers that you are wearing this time of year. Under a blazer, or over a turtleneck, with a pair of jeans is a great combination. Second, if you are going to wear the traditional cartoon-like animal print it should be in a different color such as Amy Adams’ scarf which is a leopard print in blue and grey. Finally, there is more to animal print than just leopard print, don’t forget zebra, tiger, and giraffe. These prints can help to change up your wardrobe and give you a touch of trendy. And best of all, no animals were hurt in the making!
