One of this autumn’s “must have” looks is plaid.  Plaid is a great look for this season because it combines brighter colors from the summer with darker colors of fall and winter.     As a result, it can match a variety of pieces from both your summer and winter wardrobe, thus making plaid a versatile addition to the clothes that you already have.  While plaid can bring forth images of kilts, golfers, and private school girls running around uptown, it can be worn in a highly sophisticated fashion if you find the correct cut for your age, body type, and lifestyle.

Plaid jackets are certainly fun, but my two favorite plaid items this season are a couple of plaid skirts from Gwen Stefani’s clothing brand L.A.M.B. (Love Angel Music Baby).  While Stefani may be a California girl the cut and prints of these skirts are the ultimate in urban sophistication for fall.  L.A.M.B.’s “High Waisted Plaid Skirt 2” is a gorgeous combination of the all color mocha brown and a summery teal color.  It is an enlarged version of a typical plaid print in a very simple style that falls to the knee (on most women) with an off-center zipper being the most daring feature of the garment.  In contrast, Stefani’s “High Waisted Plaid Plenty Skirt” is full of risks for the New Yorker that wants to stand out.  The print of the plaid is a cute and conservative looking green and purple plaid, but it is cut on the bias and has a tulip hem which falls right below the knee.  While these skirts are well tailored, they are not very forgiving on some women, but do not let that worry you.  Instead, let these skirts serve as a reference point when shopping for your fabulous fall plaid skirts.
