An appearance on the Oprah Show led to a record contract for a Quebec singer. Do you remember meeting Bernard LaChance? He spent his entire savings to rent out the historic Chicago Theatre to perform for just one night. He didn’t have an agent, manager or record label so he promoted himself on the street in front of the theatre. Creating a t-shirt with a seating chart on it, Bernard sold tickets and let people cross off their seats on his shirt. But his ultimate goal was to get one special guest to attend his performance,
Listen, Oprah, I have two very good tickets here in the middle of the main floor…for you and your friend, Gayle. That would be my honor if Oprah Winfrey would come and check off her seats on my t-shirt.”
So how do you get the attention of one of the most famous people in the world? Bernard turned to YouTube. He posted a video inviting Oprah and Gayle to his United States stage debut. Believe it or not…they heard him.
Unfortunately, Oprah was going to be out of the country on June 6, the date of Bernard’s concert so she did him one better. She invited him to perform on The Oprah Winfrey Show and make his American debut. Bernard was left speechless.
You may remember that infamous show. It was the same episode where Oprah gave everyone in America free grilled chicken from KFC nearly starting riots around the country. The show was entitled “Brand New Harpo Hookups,” and it aired on May 5, 2009.
Well, the realization of one dream led to another. After his appearance on the Oprah Show, Bernard was signed by Quebec’s Isba Music, the record label which handles artists such as Mitsou and Natalie Choquette. Bernard will release his first album, “While I Remember You,” on June 30. “Rainfall,” the first single from the album, will hit the airwaves on June 1.
I guess Oprah really does make dreams come true.
