Scientists say Oprah is against vaccinaitons for children. It appears some members of the science community are up-in-arms against Oprah and her “woo-woo” ideas. Phil Plait, astronomer, lecturer, author and creator of Bad Astronomy, claims Oprah “has all sorts of New Age nonsense on her show and unabashedly promotes all kinds of superstitious garbage.” Okay, so Plait’s not a big fan. But it’s the recent collaboration between Oprah and Jenny McCarthy that has his telescope all out of focus.

Oprah: you have screwed up on this one, and in a huge, huge way. Jenny McCarthy has loudly and publicly increased fears over vaccinations based on nonsense and bad science. By giving her a platform, you are virtually guaranteeing that vaccination rates will decline further, there will be more outbreaks of easily preventable diseases, and therefore we’ll see an increase in deaths of children all around the world. You have claimed to want to make the world a better place — and you have actually done so in many ways — but this one act will completely negate any good you’ve done in the past.”

Jenny McCarthy’s son, Evan, who will soon be 7-years-old had developed autism early in his young life inspiring his mom to become an activist. McCarthy has become a visible spokesperson and author on the subject exploring causes such as nutrition, environmental toxins and vaccines. It is her position on autism and vaccines that has drawn adamant criticism from the science community. And now, her equally famous boyfriend, Jim Carey, has joined the controversial movement.

So does Phil Plait have a valid point? Is Oprah endorsing the anti-vaccination movement by giving McCarthy a multi-media platform (blog and television)? Could Oprah unintentionally cause more harm than good on children’s health issues?

Oprah’s views on non-traditional theories and spirituality have become a lightning rod for hardcore scientists, conservative Christians and paranormal debunkers. In order to reach on educated decision on any topic, it is vital to discuss contradictory points of view and encourage open, honest dialogue. Will Oprah allow a forum for the pro-vaccination advocates on her show or website? Should she?
