“Amazing Animals” is the theme of The Oprah Winfrey Show on Friday, May 15. You will meet Jessica, the house-trained hippo and Brutus, the Skyping bear, along with our other phenomenal four-legged (sometimes two-legged) friends. But what is guaranteed to be one of the most inspiring, touching stories will be when five-time Oscar nominee, Glenn Close, goes behind bars. Close visits a New York State corrections facility to share the work of an unbelievable non-profit called Puppies Behind Bars.
Puppies Behind Bars is an organization that trains inmates to raise puppies to become service dogs for the disabled. According to the organization, prison inmates make excellent puppy raisers…
Not only do inmates have unlimited time to spend with the puppies, but they benefit from the responsibility of being puppy raisers in ways that are especially important to their rehabilitation: they learn patience, what it is like to be completely responsible for a living being, how to give and receive unconditional love, and -- since puppy raisers take classes and train the dogs together -- how to work as a team.”
During Friday’s show, Oprah will meet Sgt. Allen Hill who has dealt with post-traumatic stress disorder ever since returning home from Iraq in November 2007. Last February, Sgt. Hill received a yellow Labrador service dog named Frankie through the Puppies Behind Bars program. Now, Sgt. Hill and Frankie are inseparable.

There will not be a dry eye in the studio when Sgt. Hill and Frankie are reunited with Frankie’s inmate trainer at the Fishkill Correctional Facility in New York. This incredible training program not only benefits the puppies and their new owners, but it helps the inmates realize their own value and worth. These puppies give their love unconditionally…without judgment or pretense, and sometimes that’s all a person needs to get back on track.
