In some ways, you could say the holiday season officially begins this weekend with the release of Disney’s new animated “A Christmas Carol”. But it is by far not the only movie being released. There’s also a couple thrillers, an off-beat comedy, and the limited release of a drama that is already getting Oscar buzz.

Wide Releases

A Christmas Carol”: Directed by Robert Zemeckis, this animated fantasy is a retelling of Charles Dickens’ famous holiday tale, in which a London miser named Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) who despises Christmas and good cheer is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve: the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come (also all voiced by Carrey). They take Scrooge on a journey through his life, revealing what will ultimately happen if he doesn’t redeem himself. Available for viewing in 3D. Runtime: 96 minutes. Rated PG for scary sequences and images.

The Men Who Stare at Goats”: This comedy/drama directed by Grant Heslov stars Ewan McGregor as Bob Wilton, a desperate reporter in Iraq who meets Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), a self-proclaimed “Jedi warrior” and former member of the U.S. Army’s First Earth Battalion, an organization that employs and trains those with psychic powers for military missions. It’s the story of a lifetime for Bob, who helps Lyn track down the unit’s missing leader, whose disappearance may be traced to one of the psychics. Runtime: 93 minutes. Rated R for language, some drug content and brief nudity.

The Box”: In this thriller written and directed by Richard Kelly (adapted from Richard Matheson’s short story “Button, Button”), a couple (Cameron Diaz and James Marsden) who find a little wooden box on their doorstep. They are told by a stranger that pressing the button in the box will grant them $1 million; they also know that pressing the button will kill someone somewhere in the world they don’t know. Runtime: 115 minutes. Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, some violence and disturbing images.

The Fourth Kind”: Written and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, this horror film based on true events takes place in an Alaskan town, where for over 40 years people have disappeared for seemingly no reason, investigations discovering nothing. Psychologist Abigail Taylor (Milla Jovovich) travels to the region to interview the traumatized citizens who claim to have evidence that these disappearances are due to alien abductions. Runtime: 98 minutes. Rated PG-13 for violent/disturbing images, some terror, thematic elements and brief sexuality.
