Health reform has beome a real F.U.B.A.R.
Today, is a big day, The Finance Committee may vote on health reform. Everyone wants health reform, even key republicans like Bill Frisk and Bob Dole. In fact, they are onboard with the Democrat health reform plans, at least, so says a TV spot sponsored by the Democrat National Committee. Well - maybe not, because only after 24 hours of airing, the add was scrapped. It was an outright lie.
It appears that Bob Dole complained to the White House, While he supports the generic concept of health reform, he does not support any current Democratic proposals. The same could be said for most former Republican leaders who endorse the idea of reform. Yet the Democrat National Committee is so desperate to put a bipartisan spin on their efforts that they are willing to put words in the mouths of venerable people like Dole and Frisk.
Why? Because anything as screwed up as the Democrat efforts on health reform needs to share the blame. A year ago was the golden opportunity to get health reform passed. In fact, it could not fail. All it takes is a leader and, lord knows, the United States has no shortage of these. Obama was the transformational leader but regardless of who was elected president last year, health reform would have been the centerpiece of his domestic platform. The economy and the war not withstanding even back in November 2008, it would still be health reform. Seasoned leaders would understand that the economy would recover if government does not panic and do meddlesome things. They would also know that the war on terrorism would be won if the United States continues as a threat to rogue nations who support terrorist. However, the health care system still needs to be fixed because it is not only linked to the economy as 16% of our GDP and the major entitlement of government but it is also linked to homeland security as the first line of defense for the American people in both natural and manmade disasters.
Instead, what should have been a task that could and should stand on its own merit, health reform became a power trip. Having possession of both houses of Congress and the White House caused Democrat leaders to have a power brain freeze and Obama is no small part of it. They literally shut the opposition out, not because they were unloyal to the mission of health reform and other things, but because they were simply the opposition. To them, there was no reason to build coalitions.
Look what they did to health reform. When things did not go their way during the August recess, they began to realize that they needed bipartisan support, not to get the input of the other party, but to dilute accountability. If only one to two Republican leaders get onboard, to them this is bipartisanship. To them the word bipartisan is a smokescreen to hide behind. One party could not possibly screw thing up this badly; it takes two parties to screw things up twice as much.
What does twice as screwed up mean? By doing nothing, health insurance premiums might go up and Medicare might go bankrupt. If we had enduring health reform which presumed capable leadership, taxes will most likely go up, insurance will be more affordable, Medicare would remain intact and everyone will have insurance, However, twice as screwed up means, rather than having a real paradigm shift, reconciliation will pass a bill into law that no one was permitted to see which will not only raise everyone’s premiums but will also raise everyone's taxes, reduce Medicare benefits and there would still be as may as 25 million people uninsured. Twice as screwed up means squandering a chance of a lifetiime because of a preconceived social agenda held by Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the White House that the American people cannot buy into.
The military has a term for something this screwed up – F.U.B.A.R. – fouled up beyond all recognition.
