The Cadillac Escalade ESV had the highest theft
rates of 2005-2007 vehicles.

The Cadillac Escalade ESV is the most-stolen vehicle from the 2005 to 2007 model years, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the least-stolen, according to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The greatest number of owners of the extended-length version of the full-size Escalade SUV filed insurance claims based on the theft of or from their vehicles, the IIHS said -- 15 claims for every 1,000 vehicle years.

The regular-length Escalade was the third-most stolen, with an average 11.3 claims per 1,000 vehicle years.

Other full-size SUVs and pickups were also popular theft targets, as were two Dodge passenger cars that are available with a powerful V8 engine and the Honda S2000 convertible.

However, there were only an average of 0.6 claims per 1,000 vehicle years on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class luxury sedan and station wagon, the IIHS said.

The other nine least-stolen vehicles represent a very diverse group of automobiles, but many share the trait of never having resonated with consumers -- four of the cars on the list were new designs in 2005 that have since been canceled. Perhaps thieves have shown similar tastes.

Note that the IIHS figures do not reveal the total number of vehicles stolen, instead using a rate. Presumably cars that sell in higher volume are also stolen in higher total volume than the Escalade ESV.
