Motor Trend magazine announced today that it has selected the redesigned Subaru Forester as the best new-for-2009 SUV.
The compact Forester "does everything most SUV buyers need-with more off-road capability than they'll likely use-yet remains friendly and carlike in its character. In many ways, the Forester represents the new SUV paradigm; it's the right vehicle for the times," Motor Trend wrote.
The Forester beat out a diverse range of newly-designed SUVs of all shapes and sizes, including the Infiniti FX and BMW X6 luxury vehicles with far more sport than utility; big family haulers like the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Flex, and Honda Pilot; and a few truck-based models, like the Kia Borrego and Toyota Sequoia and Land Cruiser.
But what the Forester did not have to face in the SUVotY competition was the rest of the compact car-based SUV class. The closest was the Volkswagen Tiguan, which is closer in price to a BMW X3 than a mainstream "cute-ute." Because SUVotY is open only to brand-new designs, it did not have to beat its strong competitors that were introduced sooner like the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Rogue, or Toyota RAV4.
The Forester may "represent the new SUV paradigm," but it's only one of many. The 2009 model is also the third generation of Subaru Forester to do pretty much the same thing, though obviously it does it better than the original 1998 version.
