New car sales fall in September; see who's doing the least badly
This month’s list of the country's best-selling cars consists of almost all repeats from last month’s, but the winners’ positions have shifted around and most have seen significant sales declines.
10 best-selling cars, September 2008| 1. Chevrolet Silverado | 50,428 |
| 2. Ford F-Series | 32,727 |
| 3. Toyota Camry | 29,486 |
| 4. Chevrolet Impala | 27,143 |
| 5. Honda Accord | 22,371 |
| 6. Honda Civic | 21,557 |
| 7. Toyota Corolla | 21,316 |
| 8. Dodge Ram | 20,812 |
| 9. Chevrolet Malibu | 19,725 |
| 10. GMC Sierra | 18,744 |
All but the Malibu – a newbie to the best-sellers list, replacing the Nissan Altima – sold poorly this month compared to last, and only the Malibu, Impala, and Sierra saw a sales increase compared to last September.
So this month’s best-sellers order is largely determined based on who collapsed the least, and the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-Series full-size pickups led the way here.
The F-Series, which had for decades been the country’s best-selling vehicle, once again finds itself on the podium after several months behind passenger cars from Toyota and Honda, though still significantly behind its General Motors archrival.
The Chevrolet Impala nearly held steady compared to last month, which put it newly ahead of the Honda Accord, whose sales slid by nearly 50% from last month. The Toyota Camry dropped less precipitously and maintained the title of best-selling passenger car.
As noted, the Chevrolet Malibu joins the top ten list, as one of only eight General Motors products to see double-digit sales gains from last September in a month where most saw double-digit sales declines.
Most automakers also saw significant sales drops from this time last year. GM was down by 16%, Ford by 18%, Honda by 21%, Chrysler and Hyundai by 25%, Toyota by 30%, and Nissan by 37%, according to their press releases.
