Most Wiccans believe that words and names are intensely magical instruments. The names are held sacred, meditated on and much like a spell, infused with positive traits and intentions. Each time the name is heard or spoken, the mystique attributed to the name is remembered and emotionally experienced. Over time the witch develops further into that name.

The ritual name resonates with the soul of the witch and is considered to be the authentic name with powerful meaning. Many Goth Wiccans enjoy craft names that are little dark and enchanting. Once the sacred name is given or found, it is used during rituals and only told to those close and trusted, such as the family of friends found within the Coven and inner circle.

Many Wiccan and Pagan witches are given a secret name, but for the solitary witch, it is possible to gain a magical name through an easy meditation ritual. Although a simple process, taking the time necessary is important in finding a long lasting name. No need to scramble, inspiration comes when the time is right.

When choosing a magical name, research is key. Consider taking the name that shows devotion to a certain god or goddess. Create a new name by adding a prefix or suffix to their name. Keep in mind, the words Elder, Lord and Lady, Queen and King, Priest and Priestess, may resonate and feel right, but many witches gain these titles by years of dedication, practice, study and leadership.
