It might sound silly, but the late Michael Jackson's role as a committed man thinking he was the King of Pop is actually one of the sweetest roles Jackson ever played on the small screen.
It came from the hit TV sitcom The Simpsons. The first episode of season 3 entitled "Stark Raving Dad" centered around Homer being found insane for wearing a pink polo shirt to work. While on the inside, he meets a very large burly white man who convinces Homer that he is indeed Michael Jackson. The town quickly believes him, but upon revealing his true skin, they realize he's a fake.
Towards the end of the episode, Bart gets together with the Jackson impersonator and together they write a birthday song for Lisa. The song is gorgeous, and it gave Bart a sensitivity rarely seen up to this point in the show's timeline.
Jackson voiced this grotesque-yet-lovable character beautifully and convincingly. He also sings a snippet from this reporter's favorite MJ song, "Ben."
This episode is widely considered to be the single episode that thrust The Simpsons into a spotlight that has not faded as they go into their 20th year on Fox. Although Michael is never seen in the flesh, his voice and emotion are more than enough to consider this episode to be one of the great, overlooked highlights of the illustrious career of Michael Jackson.
