This weekend: Buy a postcard, buy a work of art
Opening this weekend, the 11th Annual Postcards From the Edge is a Visual AIDS benefit exhibition and sale of original, postcard-sized works on paper by established and emerging artists.
With over 1,500 one-of-a-kind postcard-sized pieces, all works are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. And just who created that original work? That is information buyers receive only after they’ve purchased the art— while visitors receive a complete list of participating artists, each work is signed on the back, so the artists’ signatures cannot be seen at first glance.
All proceeds from the show support Visual AIDS, founded in 1988 as “a response to AIDS and as a way of organizing the art world towards direct action, Visual AIDS has evolved a two-part mission. 1) Through the Frank Moore Archive Project, the largest slide library of work by artists living with HIV and the estates of artists who have died of AIDS, Visual AIDS historicizes artists' contributions while supporting their ability to continue making art and furthering their professional careers. 2) In collaboration with artists and organizations, Visual AIDS produces contemporary art exhibitions, publications, and events to spread the message AIDS IS NOT OVER.”
For a sneak peek of the show, visit the Preview Party this Friday, January 9th from 6PM to 8PM. There is a $75 admission fee for the Preview Party, which includes one raffle ticket (additional raffle tickets are $20 each). While it may be your only chance to get an early glimpse of the entire show, you’ll have to wait for the official Benefit Sale on Saturday, January 10th (though you could be the one lucky visitor from the night who will get to select any postcard!).
The Benefit Sale will be held from 11AM to 7PM. There is a $5 suggested donation for the event; each piece of artwork is $75, or buy four cards and get the fifth free!
