reIn a bold and surprising move, the popular news, class column, and advice website for WoW players has morphed into the all-new and completely re-designed WoW.com. WoW.com is a news, class column, and advice website. Seeing a trend, here? Apparently the move accomplished more than just aesthetic changes and a shorter name; the addition of user accounts turns the site into a social-networking extravaganza.
By creating a profile, website users are able to link their characters to their user accounts, sharing in-game information such as recent achievements, levels, and quest completions. Additional features are available like blog posts and adding friends for a more interactive user experience.
In order to achieve full functionality, there is an addon which must be downloaded and installed on the PC (or Mac) from which the user games. The WoW.com team has created an FAQ about the addon and all other aspects of the system available here.
With the popularity of Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites on the rise, WoW.com's foray into the field is likely destined for great success. The name change appears to be nothing more than good use of an already-owned domain, as
WoW Insider -> member of Weblogs, Inc. -> owned by AOL - who, incidentally, purchased the WoW.com domain name some time ago.
