Realm instability. Major lag issues. Vehicle collision exploits. These are all examples of common player complaints concerning the open-PvP zone of Wintergrasp, located in the Northrend continent in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. According to recent Blue posts, however, Wintergrasp will be undergoing completely unrelated changes - changes that have a substantial portion of the player-base crying, "Fun-nerf!"
CM Vaneras posted in the wee hours of the morning that
In an effort to better balance the amount of players that are in Wintergrasp at any given time, we are changing the daily quests in Wintergrasp to a weekly format. This will result in an increase in the honor reward given by these quests as well as additional Stone Keeper's Shards. These quests will reset every Tuesday morning at 3:00 AM.

While it would appear that the motivation is to reduce the number of players in prime-time WG battles, the change will essentially lower the amount of Stonekeeper Shards, honor, and gold that players can receive on a weekly basis by completing the Wintergrasp quests. The battlegrounds are relatively empty because they just aren't as fun. Arenas require a dedicated team and, for the good rewards, a much higher skill-level. The non-instanced Wintergrasp PvP zone was a refreshing addition to the PvP aspect of WoW, but lower-population servers are going to see even more frustrating battles with reduced participation if Blizzard does, indeed, implement weekly quests.
