Reasons why the SAG and Golden Globe Awards are better than the Oscars:
1) Only acting, directing, and best picture awards...no special-effects categories full of people you've never heard of
2) They separate comedic performances from dramatic ones
3) They honor TV accomplishments as well as film
4) They serve booze, so there's always a chance that someone's going to get drunk and sloppy
For all these reasons and more, we find the SAG and GG Awards to be much more satisfying than other shows. Although awards given to actors by actors tend to be a tad self-congratulatory and pompous, there were plenty of choice moments from last night's ceremony. Witness Steve Carrell's bit from the opening sequence:
Or John Krasinski and Amy Poehler presenting the award for Best Actress Female Actor in a Drama Series:
or Hugh Laurie's acceptance speech for his award for House:
All in all, a pretty entertaining night. There was also Meryl Streep's running through the audience giving high-fives after her win for Doubt, or Sean Penn's rambling and strange acceptance speech for Milk, but our hands-down favorite moment came during James Earl Jones's lifetime achievement montage...a look at his work in Conan the Barbarian.
