The nominees for the 81st annual Academy Awards were announced this morning, and it turns out they might still be relevant after all.
Lots of the usual suspects: Milk, Kate Winslet, Slumdog Millionaire, blah blah blah, Frost/Nixon, Benjamin Button (?), but the real awards coup is the nomination of Robert Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder.
The Oscars don't traditionally recognize comedies, deeming them to be less serious than "real" dramas, which is, frankly, a load of crap. Being funny is harder than crying on cue. But I digress! This year, the Academy has recognized that Downey's performance as the black lieutenant in Tropic Thunder 's movie-within-a-movie was truly one of this year's outstanding supporting performances. Bravo to all.
Not surprisingly, Heath Ledger was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight. Action movies are another category that's usually overlooked, but there's nothing like dying young to make people really appreciate you.
Other notable surprise nominations include Anne Hathaway as Best Actress for Rachel Getting Married (a terrible film that she was very good in), Richard Jenkins as Best Actor for The Visitor, and Amy Adams as Best Supporting Actress for Doubt.
With a list of nominees so good, we might actually watch this year.
