New name, still awesome. Formerly known as Artchitecture, William Rupnik Gallery focuses on low brow, lesser known artists. But quality is never sacrificed. The art has a definite urban street quality. It's edgy and makes the viewer think. After all, Will Rupnik's own background is in graffiti and street art.
The influences of graffiti and the urban landscape are clearly seen in the the very first show under the new name. A Countdown to Awesome is a collection of new works by nationally recognized artist, Ales BASK Hostomsky. His works often have a political edge and deal with how propaganda messages invade our psyche. His ideas are channeled from everywhere and observes life experiences to express an idea.
99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall is the highlight of the show. There are actually 99 small paintings of beer bottles arranged together like a puzzle on the wall. None are exactly the same. Each is a completely original framed painting of a solitary beer bottle with a skull on the label.
William Rupnik Gallery is located on the corner of East 40th and Payne on the first floor of the Loftworks Building. It was originally built in 1904 for the Broc Electric Car Company. The space went through subsequent industrial company usages over the years and in the late 80's was renovated as a live/work loft space. High ceilings, exposed ductwork and wood floors are perfect for the gallery setting.
