For many of the three million Americans who will seek medical care in the next 24 hours, yesterday was just a normal day; however, after today, life will never be the same. Over 4000 will learn they have cancer, 3500 will suffer heart attacks and 1600 will have strokes. About 1,000,000 patients will be seen in the emergency room after a fall, car accident, poisoning or drug reaction. Another 22,000 will undergo elective surgical procedures (5700 cataracts, 2200 c-sections and 1700 knee arthroscopies, to name a few) and over 32,000 will have plastic cosmetic procedure. Over 4000 adults will learn that they have diabetes.

Each year in the US there are:
980 million visits to doctors' offices and in-patient hospital admissions
110 million visits to the ER
1.4 million Americans who get a new cancer diagnosis
1.25 million who suffer a heart attack ( 650,000 new events and 450,000 recurrences)
600,000 will who have a stroke (500,000 new events and 100,000 recurrences)
7.9 million medically indicated surgical procedures
11.9 million cosmetic procedures
