Brazilian model dies of infection: Victim of microbial terrorism
Mariana Bridi is a victim of microbial terrorism. There are no human terrorists at play; the only humans in the story are the good guys. The doctors and nurses who worked so hard to save her life. This vibrant 20-year-old model died of complications from infection.
Ms. Bridi lost a war that you successfully wage every day with the microbes in your world. Her body was overtaken by bacterial invaders. The doctors fought a tough battle with their best weapons. Operations. Medication. Life support. Still, they lost.
Your immune system is like your personal homeland security system. It helps your body distinguish "self" from "non-self." The skin is like the security guards that keep foreigners from entering. Your body has some early defenses like the stomach acid , sneezing and even unpleasant gastrointestinal tactics to rid the body of enemy bacteria, viruses and other foreign microbes. The immune system wages an internal war that you win every time you get over a cold or the flu. Even with the help of medical technology, the enemy won this time.
Your take home lesson? Keep your immune system strong by getting back to basics. Eat a well balanced diet. Get solid sleep. Exercise regularly. Wash your hands and skip the anti-bacterial soap.
Know that doctors and scientists are working hard to help your immune system make peace in a world filled with microbial terrorists.
