Google will offer free Wi-Fi to travelers across the United States starting Tuesday at 47 airports including BWI, and on Virgin America flights. Dulles Airport (IAD) and Regan National (DCA) are not on the list. This offer will be available through the holiday season until January 15, 2010. This follows Yahoo's move on Tuesday to provide free Wi-Fi for an entire year in New York's Times Square. Google partners include Boingo Wireless, Time Warner Cable, and others.
When travellers log on to the free Wi-Fi, they will be given the option to give back by donating to their choice of three different charities via Google Checkout. The included charities are Climate Savers Computing, One Economy Corporation and Engineers Without Borders USA. Google says it will match donations up to $250,000, and the airport that generates the most donations by January 1, 2010 will receive $15,000 to donate to the charity of their choice. Google is also conducting a photo contest for travellers who use free in-flight or airport Wi-Fi during the holidays.
